35-year-old mother feuds with 4-year-old son's classmate's mother for not returning her son's $50 lunch box: 'She apparently told some of the other parents that [...] I could have been more appreciative that she brought the lunch box back'

Issues arose for this mother when her son's teacher accidentally sent his lunch box home with another student; the other parent delayed returning it for nearly four weeks, despite multiple polite reminders from teachers.

In life, there will always be mistakes: you will make mistakes, and mistakes will be made by others. Even if the latter is the case, you will find yourself having to solve and rectify them. "Like water off a duck's back," we'll have to let these things roll off us as they pop up, dealing with them in the best and simplest way we possibly can. Learning how to deal with these mistakes without being too caught up in the inconvenience of it all will help you get through life more simply and generally just be happier.

By no means am I meaning that this mother should have given up trying to get her son's lunch box back; in fact, quite the opposite. Rather, the fact that the mistake was made by the teacher seems to have made the other mother think that she is absolved of putting any effort into rectifying the situation, seemingly thinking that she was entitled to the lunch box simply because it happened to find its way home to her. She acts as if this is an inconvenience to her, not an obligation to do the right thing.

And it might be an inconvenience. However, this inconvenience was so minor that it's hardly a reason not to return it immediately. This is the normal and sane thing that most of us would have done in the same situation. Without a doubt, the other mother fully intended to keep the lunch box and was just waiting for the mother to give up and for everything to blow over.

It's completely natural for the mother who shared this post to be frustrated at the length of time it took for her son's lunch box to find its way back to her. Had it made its way back to her in a realistic amount of time, she might have been more thankful. But given how long it took for the lunch box to make its way back to her, she certainly has no obligation to offer thanks to the other mother.
